Some cats come into rescue looking for a family. Others become part of the very heart of the rescue itself. ❤️
Missy Bella was one of those cats.
On July 13, 2026, surrounded by the people who loved her most, Missy Bella peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She was at least 16 years young, and while we knew she had been slowing down over the past year, the last few weeks told us her time with us was coming to a close. A visit to the veterinarian confirmed a large mass near her spleen, and with heavy hearts, we made the difficult decision to spare her any further stress. She left this world peacefully, with familiar voices, gentle hands, and so much love surrounding her.
To know Missy Bella was to know that love didn't always come wrapped in purrs and head bumps.
Missy Bella returned to Chicagoland Animal Rescue in 2023 after spending twelve years with her previous family. Understandably frightened, confused, and fiercely protective of herself, she reminded us that trust isn't freely given—it is earned. Winning Missy Bella over required patience, consistency, and respect for her boundaries.
And if you earned it? You knew just how special that was.
She wasn't everyone's cat, and she didn't want to be. Missy Bella chose her people carefully, and our volunteers fortunate enough to be selected wore that honor like a badge of pride. Behind the sassy, dramatic sneers, and unmistakable attitude was a cat who simply wanted to feel safe and understood.
She became one of the rescue's most recognizable personalities.
Whether she was supervising volunteers, greeting visitors with her signature expression, silently judging the day's activities from her favorite window perch, or reminding everyone that the rescue truly belonged to her, Missy Bella left an impression on everyone who walked through our doors. She had a presence that simply couldn't be ignored, and somehow the rescue won't quite feel the same without her.
Cats like Missy Bella remind us that every personality deserves to be loved. Not every cat is a snuggly lap cat. Some are independent. Some are stubborn. Some make you earn every ounce of their affection. But that doesn't make them any less deserving of compassion—it makes the bond that much more meaningful.
We are incredibly grateful that Missy Bella spent her final chapter surrounded by people who accepted her exactly as she was. She never had to pretend to be anyone else, and we wouldn't have wanted her any other way.
To everyone who met Missy Bella, volunteered alongside her, laughed at her antics, admired her sass, or had the privilege of earning her trust—thank you for loving one unforgettable cat.
Run free, beautiful girl. Find the sunniest windows, the softest blankets, and all the treats your heart desires. We hope the Rainbow Bridge has plenty of volunteers for you to supervise. You earned your rest.

Winning Missy Bella's trust wasn't something that happened overnight. It took months of quiet visits, gentle conversations from across the room, and endless patience before her walls began to come down.
Then came the moment no one who knew Missy Bella would ever forget.
One evening, she greeted Coreen with a soft meow and the unmistakable invitation to pet her head for the very first time. Tears of joy followed. From there, their bond continued to grow—from cautious head scratches to full-body pets, and eventually to something that became a cherished routine: lap time. In her later years, Missy B made it clear that sitting in her volunteer's lap wasn't optional—it was expected.
For a cat who once seemed too frightened to let anyone close, learning to trust again was one of the greatest gifts she gave us. Missy Bella reminded us that healing takes time, patience, and unconditional love. While she will be deeply missed, her journey from fear to comfort will forever inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
